''Yes, Penryn CPU's will work on the 680i motherboard.
However, a BIOS update will be needed for full functionality, this BIOS will be released in the near future.
Thanks,''Source; http://evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=57172EVGA 680i SLI Boards to Support Penryn
I suppose you mean full support for A1 and T1 boards, because the others will not properly support quads due to a hardware issue. But, does this mean I could use a penryn on my board and not OC it at all? My new cpu and mobo should last me a bit still, but I am just curious if I could use it in a future upgrade and keep this mobo for the first part of the transition (I like to build in small steps)EVGA 680i SLI Boards to Support Penryn
Penryn needs new Voltage Revisions to run,and 680i DOESN'T support these revision's.
Penryn needs new Voltage Revisions to run,and 680i DOESN'T support these revision's.
Wait... the chip-set itself you mean? because the striker has been officially confirmed to run it on its 680i boards (striker, striker extreme)
I wouldnt pay attention too AARONRULZ1 if a EVGA administrator says it will work then it will.

Well, it just seems that if Asus boards could run it with a bios update, I don't see why evga couldn't.

Eh. There just trying to keep 680i boards alive. Even though the P35 boards are a lot better.
Eh. There just trying to keep 680i boards alive. Even though the P35 boards are a lot better.
That makes absolutely ZERO sense to me. First off, what P35 board can run SLI? second off, (sarcasm) why does nvidia even support 8800 gts's... ultras are a lot better. Why does microsoft support XP anymore, vista is the future. Why do people need floppies to flash their bios when they could do it through windows... (/sarcasm) I think you get where I am going with that. Just because something gets a little dated doesn't mean we should all go throwing our money around at the newest items.
Eh. There just trying to keep 680i boards alive. Even though the P35 boards are a lot better.
Show me benchmarks that show P35 are better...All the benchmarks seem to indicate they are on par and 680i has ummmm SLI .. ?
Also, to support the 680i chipset with SLI enabled:
Not sure about SLI but I know they support crossfire. You guys take me way to seriously. I know the 680i boards are really good. I was going to get one but no one knew if they would support the new penryn processors. According to your article some of them do. Whos got time to wait to see what boards are going to support 45nm processors. Why not buy what you know works???
Also, to support the 680i chipset with SLI enabled:(Image thanks to HotHardware.com)
thats great. compare last gen ati cards to 8800's:roll:
SLI is a waste of money especially with the cards that are out today. One good card should last you a really long time.

And back to Killfox's statement of ''SLI is a waste of money,'' when the cards are cheaper and SLI can beat an ultra card on some games.. isn't that a better deal then buying a new 600+ $$ card?

Crossfire HD 2900 XT vs. 8800 Ultra
http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1131Gah, its like people didn't even read my post. I was fighting for SLI capability. You can't run SLI on a crossfire board, thus, you can't have two nvidia cards without the nvidia chipset (the original thread topic, no?). I don't care what ATI performs at, because I have an nvidia card, and I sure don't feel like pulling out my wallet to get the newest card of either company. Please read the thread before you dismiss any information posted.
So what 680i mobos will actually support the new penryn??? It cant be all of them can it???
