I recently wanted to build a computer and I was torn if I should buy a 2900xt or a 8800 GTS 640 mb Card. Checking the price, I found that the 2900xt was $100 dollars more expensive. So I am asking if that 2900xt is worth it. I heard that new drivers will be coming out for the 2900xt that would make it more worthwhile. So, Im asking for opinions on the 2900xt compared to the gtsIs the ATI 2900 xt a Card worth the Price?

Well in Canada, it is around 100$ cdn more expensive..
The hd 2900xt 512MBis the same price (within $20, but at the same MSRP) as the 8800gts 640MB. They perform similarly, the hd2900xt beats the 8800gts generally, but uses more power/gives off more heat.
yea imo it is worth the extra bit. dont buy it if its 100 dollars more because its not worth that much more, but in places where its much cheaper then yea go for it.
They are both pretty even, with the GTS winning slightly more often.
It's really a question of weather or not you prefer nvidia or ATi and if you have to power supply to run it.

It is a little bit of a noodle twister. Personally I would go with nvidia but really I think I would just flip a coin. Let God decide for me.
*note since your in Canada there is this sweet site called shopbot.ca that price matches for you, you should check it out.

I hate to quote my self but I think I got to. The smartest thing to do imo would be to buy a EVGA 8800 GTS 640 and upgrade using the step up program later when the 9 series releases. Just remember you would have 90 days so it would be a close call and might be best to wait maybe a couple more days from now just so you can make sure you would make it.

Yea, I'll probably do that seeing as I'll start buying stuff for the computer around September
ATI 2900XT is good card better than GTS but weaker than GTX but i suggest u get GTX alot better and alot more stable than both GTS and HD2900XT.
If you're going to be buying the PC parts around September, come back for advice then.Things can change drastically.
Look at these benchmarks and decide for yourself.
Look at these benchmarks and decide for yourself.
Don't use tomshardware GPU charts.Very inaccurate as they use older and slower CPUs/RAM for the older cards, which of course affect 3D performance.

Right? What would you suggest? Just do a google search of the cards you want to compare?
i'd go with the 2900xt.
If you're going to be buying the PC parts around September, come back for advice then.Things can change drastically.
Indeed. Cant wait for Bioshock. That should show at least some true comparison in DX10 for those cards. I heard that they guys that reviewd game in one mag or something were using AMD dual core CPU (5600 i think it was), and 8800 GTS entry model (probably the one whit 320MB) and the game ran very smoothly on max settings in 1600x1200. But of course that was in DX9. Cant wait for some comparison under Vista and DX10. :D
Awesome, domke.By September, you know, the Intel X38 Chipset will be launched and we should even see the R650/R680 (65/55nm version of R600) surface, which will be great. Further, it's not as if they could test the X1950 XT with the QX6850 (examples), as said CPU wasn't even out by then. Exactly. Google the card your after and look for reviews from sites such as guru3d.com, beyond3d.com, anandtech.com and etc...
