Stuck in the past with a POS Socket 754, 3700+The rest of my PC is good enough to run this new generation on at least medium I assume, but is minimum possibly with that processor? The next generation of games .. playable without Dual Core?
Sure, it's possible, but it'll suck. Save up some cash monies and get a dual-core; a 4200+ X2 at least. The next generation of games .. playable without Dual Core?
The generation of games now is slowly adding code to take advantage of dual cores, so next generations will probably have native dual core support and start focusing on quad cores as a minimum, so the S754 CPU is a bit outdated here. We had S939 + S940 for Opterons, we are with Socket AM2 now and then AM3. It's time to do a little upgrade. ;)
I would say so yes, most PC gamers still have single cores.
You will be able to play them but at very low resolution and settings. You will have problems with games that use CPU a lot, like GTR2 or Suprem Commander
the devs will have to cater for people with only one core seeing that there a stillbig part of the market. i give it aroudn 2 years for one core to full die.
We'll known for sure in 1-2 years, the way i see it AMD and Intel are pushing Multi-core to make money. Doesn't necessarily mean the devs will be pushing it right away, it might help, but a part of minimum requirements i don't think. IIRC AMD and Intel still have plans for single core CPUs with their next die shrinks/cpu architectures.
The latest C.P.U. speed requirement that I heard was 3.0 GHz single core as the low end requirement for a game. My guess is that Dual-Core C.P.U.'s will be the minimum requirement by 2008.
u will need a dual core....games are only one the many reasons u need a duo core
I don't think a dual-core CPU will be mandatory any time soon. There is no such thing as next-gen games on PC in the first place.Current multihreaded games only show a clear advantage on dual-core CPU's at low resolutions. At normal and high resolutions the difference is only in the order of 5 - 10%. A good GPU is much more important for gameplay.

I'd give PC games a few more years before they ditch single core CPUs altogether.
I'd give PC games a few more years before they ditch single core CPUs altogether.
not more years, say a year maximum.

They don't have a SINGLE single core on their roadmaps, even this generation they didn't manufacture single cores.

I'd give PC games a few more years before they ditch single core CPUs altogether.
not more years, say a year maximum.
One year for the vast majority of the population to switch to dual/quadcores?
Highly doubtful. Look at DX10, you think they will kill DX9 support in a year?Single cores will be fine until late 2009. By that time we will be at least 3 quadcore generations into it and all apps will get a huge benefit from have more then 3 cores, multithreading FTW!
pentium 4 3.4 ghz sucks on all games, after a year, it should be dead.
pentium 4 3.4 ghz sucks on all games, after a year, it should be dead.
Well I still have a single core cpu and still using max, high settings With a Sempron 3300+ and even with Supcom, after the last few patches I can have around 800 units before it starts to lag.
Actually i just read a review in PCGamer about Shadowrun. The min requirments called for a e6600 dual core....and those were the min!Recommended was a dual core at 3.2!Madness...!!!
