Can you get a used one from a local shop? They might have a couple good ones where you can try out yourself.
I know this is out of your budget, but this laptop for $599 is so much better than any $500 laptop.for the 15.4 inch version http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?config_data=%26c=us%26cs=04%26fb=1%26kc=9%26l=en%26oc=BQPCJOD%26X=9%26Y=6
I added $50 more dollers and decided to choose this processor http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us%26cs=19%26l=en%26oc=DNCWHA1%26s=dhswill this make the laptop perform better?

first the link ''thing'' is on the tool-bar its under ''font family'' second try this oneis not for gaming but will get the job done also you can upgrade it on the website up to 2 gigs and 160 gig hard-drive. very nice http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store%26category=notebooks%26a1=From+price%26v1=Under+%24500%26series_name=V6000Z_series
I added $50 more dollers and decided to choose this processor http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us%26cs=19%26l=en%26oc=DNCWHA1%26s=dhswill this make the laptop perform better?
so your budget is now $550?well even more reason to buy that Vostro 1500 I linked to before. its only $50 more now.Advantages of the Dell Vostro 1500 over 15011) Vostro have magnesium alloy chasis2) Vostro have mylar sealed keyboard making it spill resistant3) the Vostro comes with 120GB HD vs 60GB on that 15014) the Vostro's entry T5470's performance is equal to a TL-60 on the 15015) the Vostro comes with a 8400M GS video card instead of the integrated Xpress 1150(i know you don't care about gaming performance, but this have other advantages too like it don't use up system RAM unlike the 1150)6) the Vostro comes with a DVD-RW instead of DVD-ROM on the 1501For $599 you get a T5470(new Santa Rosa series), 8400M GS video card, 120GB HD, 1GB RAM(upgrade it yourself)much much better than that 1501 and any HP at this price range.
but the VOSTRO only has 512 MB of ram and wont vista be slow
but the VOSTRO only has 512 MB of ram and wont vista be slow
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?config_data=%26c=us%26cs=04%26fb=1%26kc=9%26l=en%26oc=BQPCJOD%26X=9%26Y=6click on my link, its 1GB and its XP
or you can get the 14inch Vostro 1400, identical spec as the Vostro 1500 I linked to before.http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us%26cs=04%26l=en%26s=bsd%26kc=65023%26oc=bqpcjba
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us%26cs=04%26kc=6W300%26l=en%26oc=bqcwk3x%26s=bsdThere ya go...same thing but with XP...personally I don't trust Vista yet so I'd stick with XP, and you won't lose performance becuse you only have 512MB of RAM.
SWEET!!!:DI think ill get the Vostro with Vista just to try it out and if Vista doesn't work I can always go back to XPThanks manI mean the vostro 1000 thats the one im going to get!
